Coziest Apple Crumble

Tis the season for apple picking!

Imagine the perfect spoonful of warm, tender, apples and the aroma of cinnamon that fills your home. Made with wholesome ingredients, enjoy the coziest taste of home you can find.

Recipe

Ingredients:

For the topping:

  • ⅓ cup all purpose flour

  • ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats

  • ⅓ cup dark brown sugar slightly heaping

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ cup + 1 tablespoon cold butter cut into very small cubes

For the crisp:.

  • 5-6 medium Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and very thinly sliced

  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

  • ⅓ cup + 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • Pinch of nutmeg

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease an 8x8 baking pan or individual ceramic dishes with butter or nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

  • 2. Peel most of the skin from apples and slice thin. NOTE: I like to leave some skin for the added fiber.

  • 3. To make the filling: Place apples, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in a large bowl and toss to combine. Allow to sit for 15-20 minutes.

  • 4. To make the topping: Combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and pecans (optional) in a large bowl until well-combined.

  • 5. Add in the pieces of butter and use your hands to squeeze and combine until the mixture becomes crumbly and resembles wet sand. NOTE: You can use a spatula or spoon, I find it easier to use my hands.

  • 6. Once finished, take 1/3 cup of the topping mixture and toss with the apple mixture.

  • 7.  Place the apple mixture in prepared pan and sprinkle evenly with topping.

  • 8. Bake the crisp on a baking sheet (just in case the filling bubbles over!) for 45-55 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling.

  • 9. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes on wire rack. Serve warm with your favorite vanilla ice cream

Quick Tip

For Easy Clean Up

I purchased oven liners from amazon to make spills ten times easier to clean up. This time it was on my lower rack but you can place it on the very bottom too. Wipe down the liner or use a new one. Either way, mess free ovens, no more hurting your back to scrape off the mess from the bottom :)
